The Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement (CBFA) Secretariat is seeking an Executive Director to lead the successful implementation of CBFA. The CBFA is a historic agreement between the 21 members of the Forest Products Association of Canada and 9 leading environmental organizations. The Agreement, when fully implemented, will conserve significant areas of Canada’s vast Boreal Forest, protect threatened woodland caribou and provide a competitive market edge for participating companies.

We are looking for a candidate with a strong vision of leadership and the skill to build consensus among our disparate signatories on the path forward. The candidate must be able to inspire and motivate a committed staff team, thrive in an ambiguous environment, and manage highly complex relationships, processes, and numerous moving parts.

We are not necessarily looking for policy expertise in fields of forestry or the environment. While knowledge of these areas is helpful, we are more interested in a candidate’s ability to exercise thought leadership, articulate a compelling vision and plan, mobilize the support to achieve them, and execute efficiently. Much of our success depends on building positive relationships with governments and First Nations. The successful candidate should come with a solid understanding of what is required to influence decision makers and the skill to advocate for our positions in multiple political arenas.

Integrity and transparency are the cornerstones of our success to date. Companies who compete with one another and environmental groups who have historically been their adversaries must see you as a trusted advisor who understands and appreciates differing perspectives and will be responsive to their needs.

The boreal forest is the largest intact wilderness on the planet and more than half a million Canadians depend on a competitive forest industry for their livelihood. Above all, this position is about finding win-win solutions for economic prosperity and conservation.
